My name is Andrew Wymer. I’m a D65 parent, and I’m running for Illinois District 65 Board of Education.

This is a tenuous time for D65. Instead of looking backward, I am committed to fighting for a fiscally accountable and organizationally cohesive school district. Such a district would be committed to centering the thriving of all children.
We face a severe budget crisis, longstanding racial inequality, and damaged trust in the community. All of this is against the backdrop of significant shifts at the federal level toward regressive politics. As we face these challenges, I believe we can move forward together, ensuring all members of our community have a seat at the table.
On day one, I will push for accountability and equity for all.

WHAT I BELIEVE
Financial accountability is absolutely essential for the future of our district. I will rebuild trust with the community, ensure we follow the highest standard of auditing and reporting, and make the difficult decisions to chart a sustainable financial future. I will be a careful steward of the significant public funds the district receives, with clear and measurably benchmarks for accountability.
​
Community-centered strategic planning and organizational assessment is necessary for us to move forward in a cohesive and intentional way. The next strategic plan will be the board’s contract with the community. It will be: rooted in community engagement; contain transparent and measurable benchmarks; and be used to hold the district and the board accountable.
​​
Measurable equity commitments that are transparently communicated and regularly evaluated are crucial if we hope to address systemic gaps impacting historically marginalized persons and communities in the district. I am committed to equitable outcomes and intentional belonging for racially minoritized, queer, disabled, immigrant, low-income, and multilingual students.
​
​Teacher retention and increased morale are essential to positive educational outcomes. Teachers are the heart of our district, and I am committed to ensuring a healthy professional environment that promotes trustworthiness, open communication, and teacher support systems.
​
Environmental sustainability and attention to environmental justice are crucial long-term concerns in order for the district to ensure its footprint contributes to a healthy future for students, our community, and the world.

I’m committed to our community and its flourishing.​
​
My family and I live on the south side of Evanston, and I have two children in District 65 at Oakton Elementary School. I have deep Midwest roots, and I have lived in Evanston for a total of ten years. I earned my PhD and post-doctorate in Evanston. Since 2020, I I have held a position as a tenured associate professor at Garrett Seminary. Prior to that I served as an assistant professor and assistant dean at a graduate school in New Jersey.
​
I currently serve on a number of professional boards. In my board roles, I have been involved in leading DEI initiatives and as a treasurer of a nonprofit organization. I study religious practices with particular attention to race, power, and justice. My work includes a wide array of juried scholarly publications, grant awards, and public presentations. I have extensive experience in:

leading organizational change and DEI initiatives

nonprofit governance including an array of internal and external committee roles including significant chair experience
​In my personal time, I enjoy learning about our community and joining in the fight for justice in our schools and our community through my work with a number of community organizations. I have served on the Oakton Elementary PTA Executive Board and as the Oakton Elementary PTA Equity Project (PEP) representative. I also was part of a Next Steps Anti-Racism cohort of teachers and parents from Oakton Elementary.
​
​I currently serve on the executive board of the Evanston/North Shore NAACP where I chair the Environmental and Climate Justice Committee. For two years, in my NAACP role, I convened the Evanston Environmental Justice Coalition prior to its current reorganization. I also serve on the Cook County District 13 Environmental Justice Task Force and the City of Evanston's Environmental Equity Investigation Leadership Committee. I am also honored to support the great work of Evanston Cradle to Career as a member of their 2025 Systems Change Grants Selection Committee. I previously served on the Ridgeville Park District's Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee for a couple of years.

All of these experiences form a foundation of relationships, expertise, and commitments that I will bring to our work on the D65 School Board.

Mi familia y yo vivimos en el lado sur de Evanston, y tengo un hijo y una hija en el Distrito 65 en Oakton Elementary School. Tengo raíces en el Medio Oeste, y he vivido en Evanston un total de diez años. Obtuve mi doctorado y posdoctorado en Evanston.
